Why Minerals Matter on the Homestead

(Minerals on the homestead, animals, families, and future generations)

When we first started homesteading, minerals were the last thing on our minds.

We were busy just trying to survive the basics โ€” learning how to raise animals, grow herbs, manage chores, and keep up with a life that suddenly required a lot more from us than before. After about 6 months we started to dabble in minerals and then after year we were in full swing with minerals.

Thatโ€™s when minerals stopped being an afterthought and started becoming a foundation.

Minerals Are Essential, Not Optional

Minerals are something both humans and animals need every single day. They support the body in ways we donโ€™t always see right away, but when theyโ€™re missing, problems eventually show up.

Minerals help the body:

  • Repair and rebuild
  • Detox naturally
  • Support immune function
  • Regulate hormones
  • Strengthen bones and muscles
  • Maintain proper organ function

God designed our bodies โ€” and our animals โ€” to need these building blocks. When theyโ€™re missing, the body does the best it can, but itโ€™s always working from a place of lack.

On the homestead, mineral deficiencies are more common than most people realize, especially with todayโ€™s depleted soils.

Minerals and Healthy Breeding Animals

One of the biggest reasons minerals matter so much on the homestead is reproduction. Healthy offspring start long before breeding season.

Before Breeding: Preparing the Body

Minerals directly affect the quality of both eggs and sperm. This isnโ€™t something that can be fixed last minute.

It takes about three months for mineral improvements to show up in the body. That means mineral support should begin well before breeding if you want to see real results.

Proper mineral levels help:

  • Improve fertility
  • Support healthy conception
  • Reduce the risk of weak or unhealthy offspring
  • Lower the chances of birth defects and developmental issues

During Pregnancy: Supporting Growth and Strength

During pregnancy, the mother is doing all the work โ€” growing bones, organs, muscles, and nervous systems.

Minerals help support:

  • Proper development of the baby
  • Strong bones and joints
  • Healthy nervous systems
  • Muscle function needed for labor

Animals with good mineral support often experience easier labor and stronger babies, which is something every homesteader hopes for.

After Birth: Milk Quality Matters

Minerals donโ€™t stop being important once the baby is born.

What the mother consumes directly affects:

  • Milk production
  • Milk quality
  • The nutrients passed on to the baby

If the mother is mineral deficient, her health suffers and so does her milk. Strong mineral support helps ensure milk is nourishing and supportive of healthy growth from the very beginning. It also ensures momma is healing and staying strong from childbirth and will be able to take care of her babies better.

Every Animal Is Different

One thing weโ€™ve learned is that not all animals need the same minerals.

Different species โ€” and even different breeds โ€” have different requirements.

For example:

  • Most sheep require very low copper
  • Icelandic sheep, however, need slightly more copper than many other sheep breeds.
  • Goats generally need more copper than sheep
  • Cattle have higher needs altogether

This is why itโ€™s important to research your specific animals and not assume that what works for one farm will automatically work for yours.

Observation matters. Knowing your animals matters.

Pro Tip

Keep Activated Charcoal on hand. I say this incase animal gets into the wrong minerals or eat something they aren’t supposed to. (We had a calf eat all of the sheep minerals.) They can become sick and potentially die. To combat this give your animals activated charcoal water solution to help absorb what it ate. It may not work, but in my experience it will help.

Soil Health Plays a Big Role

Healthy animals start with healthy soil.

If the soil is depleted, the grass, hay, and forage grown on it will be too. That means animals may look like theyโ€™re eating well but still be missing key nutrients.

A soil test can be helpful because it gives insight into what minerals your land may be lacking. But if that feels overwhelming or out of reach right now, donโ€™t let that stop you from making progress.

You donโ€™t have to do everything at once.

A Simple Place to Start: Kelp

If youโ€™re unsure where to begin, kelp is a great starting point for many homesteads.

Kelp naturally contains trace minerals and iodine and can help support overall mineral balance. Itโ€™s not a cure-all, but itโ€™s a gentle, simple way to begin supporting your animals without overcomplicating things.

As with anything on the homestead, introduce minerals slowly and pay attention to how your animals respond.

Minerals Are a Foundation

One of the biggest lessons weโ€™ve learned is this:

You canโ€™t out-feed a mineral deficiency.

Minerals support life at its most basic level. They help animals grow, reproduce, produce milk, and function the way God designed them to.

Once we stopped treating minerals as optional and started treating them as essential, everything else on our homestead began to fall into place.
